Third Molars
Third molars, or “wisdom” teeth, will typically erupt in late teens or early twenties. Often there is not enough room in the mouth for these ‘extra’ teeth, or they may be impacted below the gum line, requiring extraction.
The position of third molars, at the very back of the mouth in the upper and lower jaw, makes them difficult to keep clean with regular brushing and flossing. They may also form in an awkward, misaligned position that can result in crowding or damage to adjacent teeth.
Prevent Infection
To prevent dental infection or damage to other teeth, it is often recommended that these third molars be removed. Depending on their position and stage of development, it may be best to remove wisdom teeth before they erupt through the gums.
A thorough examination complete with dental x-rays will allow the dentist or oral surgeon to determine whether third molars require extraction, and if so, plan the best course of action for treatment.
Relax During The Process
Dental sedation will allow the patient to relax and be comfortable during the procedure. Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed after the procedure, along with post-operative care instructions, to ensure minimal discomfort and proper healing.
